The difference between 'adopt' and 'foster'?

I always get muddled up between the meanings of these two words and I am currently writing a story where it mostly focuses on a lady deciding to take a young girl into her care for a few weeks, and I don't know if that is called adoption or fostering, so please help me and tell me which one I am using in my story.
